Resource Corner: Who is this man? by John Ortberg

March 25, 2022

Have you ever wondered about the impact of Jesus on the world today? Whether you’d call yourself a Christian or not, you might be surprised to know that the world in which we live has been utterly transformed in almost every way by the life of Jesus Christ. This is the subject of interest for John Ortberg in his excellent book, “Who Is This Man?: The Unpredictable Impact of the Inescapable Jesus”

I first read this book around a decade ago, and I remember being enthralled from the very beginning. Let me share some of the quotes that still feel as poignant to me after all this time:

“Jesus’ impact was greater a hundred years after his death than during his life; it was greater still after five hundred years; after a thousand years his legacy laid the foundation for much of Europe; after two thousand years he has more followers in more places than ever.” (p.11)

“…Dinesh D’Souza put it this way: ‘Science as an organized, sustained enterprise arose only once in human history … in Europe, in the civilization then called Christendom.” (p. 69)

“Without Jesus there would be no Dante, whose Divine Comedy was the primary shaper of modern Italian, and no Martin Luther, whose German Bible became the primary shaper of the German language. Without Jesus, there would be no King James Bible, which became along with Shakespeare the most important source for the shaping of the English language, and no John of the Cross, ‘whom many historians and literary critics regard as the finest poet in the Spanish language.” (p. 157)

…I could comfortably list a dozen more quotes. But it’s probably better if you are able to read this book for yourself. It’s an excellent resource for anyone interested in seeing how the sustained impact of Jesus’ life continues in almost every facet of daily life. Enjoy!
