Resource Corner: “The Reason for God” – Timothy Keller

April 22, 2022

Tim Keller is one of the most renowned Christian thinkers of the last thirty years. This week, we recommend his classic book, “The Reason for God: Belief in an Age of Skepticism.”

Almost all of us have wrestled with some of the faith’s most difficult questions, and not all of the answers are easy to come by. In “The Reason for God,” Tim Keller addresses a whole host of different subjects that address some of those hard questions. It’s a masterpiece of Christian apologetics.

If you haven’t read it yet, this is a good book to consider a “must read.” Here are some incredible quotes from this amazing work:

“People who blithely go through life too busy or indifferent to ask hard questions about why they believe as they do will find themselves defenseless against either the experience of tragedy or the probing questions of a smart skeptic.”

“All doubts, however skeptical and cynical they may seem, are really a set of alternate beliefs. You cannot doubt Belief A except from a position of faith in Belief B. For example, if you doubt Christianity because ‘There can’t be just one true religion,’ you must recognize that this statement is itself an act of faith. No one can prove it empirically, and it is not a universal truth that everyone accepts.”

“Christianity is also reputed to be a cultural straitjacket. It allegedly forces people from diverse cultures into a single iron mold. It is seen as an enemy of pluralism and multiculturalism. In reality, Christianity has been more adaptive (and maybe less destructive) of diverse cultures than secularism and many other worldviews.”

“The Christian gospel is that I am so flawed that Jesus had to die for me, yet I am so loved and valued that Jesus was glad to die for me.”

…I could go on. My Kindle app tells me that I have 130 highlights in “The Reason for God,” and after two readings I can wholeheartedly tell you that the book is filled with incredible wisdom throughout. If you’re looking to grow in the foundations of your faith, this is a great book for you.
