Resource Corner: How To Be Filled With The Holy Spirit – A. W. Tozer

January 28, 2022

This Sunday, we’ll be talking about the Holy Spirit in Ephesians 1:13-14. With that in mind, it seems like a great time to recommend A. W. Tozer’s “How to Be Filled with the Holy Spirit.” It’s only 62 pages on Kindle, but boy, those pages are powerful!

(By the way, you might have noticed that I’ve shared a lot of short books recently – my hope is that these would be less time-consuming to read, should you choose to read them!)

This 70-year-old book is packed with rich insights and will be a great encouragement to anyone looking to pursue a deeper walk with the Spirit. Tozer describes how many of us in the “evangelical Christian” world believe in the Holy Spirit, but don’t experience His work in our lives; he says it lies “under the snow, forgotten” (p14).

I think you’ll agree that this is not the sort of church family we want to strive to be. We want to pursue faithful understanding God’s Word and a powerful move of His Spirit in tandem, and to get there, Tozer asks a fairly poignant question:

“Do you want to hand the keys of your soul over the the Holy Spirit and say, ‘Lord, from now on I don’t even have a key to my own house. I come and go as Thou tellest me’? Are you willing to give the office of your business establishment, your soul, over to the Lord and say to Jesus, ‘You sit in this chair and handle these telephones and boss the staff and be Lord of this outfit’? That is what I mean. Are you sure you want to do this? Are you sure that you desire it?” (p.32)

Wow.

How to Be Filled with the Holy Spirit is a short, challenging book that will certainly impact many of us if we read it. This is a book worth reading as we seek to be more effective in our Spirit-led ministry to the people around us today.
