Resource Corner: Confronting Christianity – Rebecca Mclaughlin

March 9, 2022

Jesus never promised that the Christian life would be easy. And that’s ok. As believers, we often experience a barrage of questions and comments that might cause us to question our faith. That’s why this week’s recommended resource is Rebecca McLaughlin’s book, “Confronting Christianity – 12 Hard Questions for the World’s Largest Religion.”

McLaughlin recognises that there are many controversial beliefs in the Christian faith that many non-Christians struggle to accept. However, she delves into sociology, science, and psychology to show that, in actual fact, these subjects don’t disagree with Christianity but align with it.

The 12 questions the author tackles are:

1. Aren’t we better off without religion?
2. Doesn’t Christianity crush diversity?
3. How can you say there’s only one true faith?
4. Doesn’t religion hinder morality?
5. Doesn’t religion cause violence?
6. How can you take the bible literally?
7. Hasn’t science disproved Christianity?
8. Doesn’t Christianity denigrate women?
9. Isn’t Christianity homophobic?
10. Doesn’t the Bible condone slavery?
11. How could a loving God allow so much suffering?
12. How could a loving God send people to hell?

“Confronting Christianity” is dense with helpful answers and insights that reach beyond even the questions posed. For example, the author cites research that suggests that those who regularly attend services are more optimistic, have lower rates of depression, are less likely to commit suicide, have a greater purpose in live, are less likely to divorce, and are more self-controlled. She talks about the data around couples who live together before marriage, and the realities behind the Crusades. There’s a lot here!

As believers, these are important questions to grapple with, and McLaughlin does a stellar job of wrestling with them herself. For that reason, we recommend this great book.
